Atria One is a seven storey office building in Edinburgh’s Financial District, currently home to leading names including PricewaterhouseCoopers, Brewin Dolphin and IBM.
Form Design Consultants was appointed by the building's managing agents to explore alternative design options for the underused common atrium space.
The brief was to create a stimulating shared area which could be used for informal meetings, or to relax and unwind.
Form were asked to retain the limestone wall and floor finishes. No mechanical fixings, or potentially damaging adhesives, were to be fixed to the building fabric.
The challenge was to make visitors feel comfortable with such a large volume, finished in hard materials.
The solution provided was the creation of a series of 'islands’ with differing collections of furniture, ranging from from dining chairs to high-backed sofas, for privacy.
Form introduced a timber structure, to create a semi transparent room-within-a-room, screening the space from the main circulation route and the offices on the upper floors.
Sound absorbing floor finishes helped distinguish seating areas from the main circulation routes.
Orange and green was chosen to create a vibrant interior set against the neutral backdrop of limestone.
The project has been very successful, with many compliments being received from happy tenants.
