Following their merger with Investec Wealth & Investment (UK), there was an immediate need to combine the Edinburgh offices of both wealth management teams.
Challenge?
Form DC's initial space analysis deemed the ground floor at Rathbones' existing office the best option in which to do this.
However, being located on a busy street and backing onto a service lane presented a number of challenges.
Natural lighting was a concern from the beginning of the project, so it was important to treat the windows to the front and rear of the suite to provide suitable privacy, without reducing the flow of light into the space.
Solution?
Elegant sliding screens, to the south elevation, distort views in and out. Graphic manifestation, to the eastern curtain walling, reduces disturbance from the service lanes.
Planting to the north elevation obscures eye-height sightlines from George Street, whilst still allowing natural light in.
For planet
Warm, low lighting in the arrival area contrasts with cool, bright light of the office spaces, causing these spaces to appear much brighter, demarcating office zones.
Sustainability and space planning informed the choice of work spaces where, for example, meeting pods provide meeting spaces, reducing the need for partitioning and service alterations, and enabling future flexibility.
Alterations to the ceiling were limited, with tiles being largely retained, aiding costs and aligning with Rathbones’ sustainability values.
For business
The integration of the two wealth teams was a critical element to address within the project. The centrally located arrival area, with touchdown point and breakout space, help to encourage informal colleague interactions, promoting a sense of community.
The feature ceiling connects two main office spaces and facilities are mirrored, or centrally positioned, ensuring the same experience for everyone.
Large meeting rooms and food preparation spaces were avoided, encouraging staff to make use of the excellent facilities on the 3rd floor.
For people
The look and feel of the office enhances the previously curated modern palette seen across the Rathbones' estate of blues, greens, blush pinks and planting, introducing warmer tones and textures through a deep red and natural oak.
The fit-out has resulted in a working environment which provides focus, meeting and breakout spaces that support Rathbones' hybrid working model and the well-being of their people.
Innovative design solutions have allowed the ground floor space to work successfully, despite challenging contextual settings, and the office acts as a hub, beautifully integrating the two teams.
